The King and the Clown
The King and the Clown, an all time No.1 Korean Movie has its qualities of being called one. The story is about two ministrel both males who came to the capital to look for more money and one of them really has such delicate features that made him almost a woman. They then met onto fellow ministrels and challenged them during their performance.
They became partners after that and went on to put up a show mocking the king and his consort. They were caught and punished by an official and the troupe’s captain requested to perform for the king and if the King finds it amusing then they should not be punished.
His request was granted and they managed to make the King and his consort laughed at the last minute. The King then decided to keep them in the palace.
But, the ministers were not happy with the decision that a commoner troupe have a quarter in the palace. They feel that it should not be allowed according to the law of the previous king and obviously this upset the King greatly for he felt that he was being surpressed by his subjects.
The captain of the troupe upon knowing this decided to put up a show this time mocking the ministers. The king was extremely amused by it but his ministers weren’t and some were even afraid as they were indeed involved in the corruptions allegations shown in the play. The king then took the opportunity to reprimand all the ministers who always tell what the King should or should not to do. On the spot, the minister who was mentioned in the play was severely punished and his rank stripped off.
The King took a liking in the ministrel who looked like a girl( gong-gil) and always summoned him to entertain him. His counterpart( the troupe’ captain) was grealy upset by this or rather jealous as he seems to like him too. The troupe was then asked to perform a play by the King’s loyal subject the official who brought them in to the palace. He wanted to leave the palace but gong-gil told him to leave after the play requested by the official as it could only be performed in the palace.
